AI-PROCARE is a NordForsk-funded Nordic research project focused on the responsible procurement of AI systems in healthcare. The project investigates how procurement processes can be designed to support sustainable, equitable, and engaging work environments for healthcare professionals. By combining empirical research and co-design across Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Sweden, AI-PROCARE will produce new knowledge and practical guidelines for procurement that account for the work environment, stakeholder involvement, and responsible AI governance.
Our team brings together expertise in human-computer interaction, health informatics, digital health, patient safety, usability, healthcare work environments and organizational research. Some of us have extensive experience researching healthcare IT systems, while others have worked directly in healthcare or with public-sector organizations and procurement.
So, what brought us to AI-PROCARE?
“We need to understand the complexity of users’ tasks and use contexts if we want procurement processes to be successful,” says doctoral researcher Topias Sarri.
Other team members are particularly interested in the organizational side of procurement: how different stakeholders collaborate, how the value of an AI system is assessed, and how work environment considerations can become part of procurement decisions.
For Professor Torkil Clemmensen, the intersection between AI, work environment and sociotechnical change is particularly interesting. His background combines research on human-AI interaction with three years of experience working as a healthcare professional.
Why focus on procurement?
We see public procurement as an important opportunity to influence what kinds of digital technologies enter healthcare – and how they affect the people who use them.
Project leader Professor Åsa Cajander has researched digitalization in healthcare since 2002 and sees procurement as a way of making a real difference: “I am really interested in improving the digital work environment in healthcare and I think that public procurement is really one way of making a difference.”
